In 1945, the opera houses and concert halls that had defined Richard Strauss’s career lay in ruins.

The composer was devastated. His response was a work for strings that many have interpreted as an epitaph for civilization. Metamorphosen is dominated by a single theme from the funeral march of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, from which Strauss crafts a monument of huge pain and profundity.
